I've been talking a lot about hatred and irrational behavior lately. Then I found this news story from CNN and even I was stunned at the amount of crazy out there these days. Steven Anderson, a Baptist pastor, preached a sermon explaining why he "hates" Barack Obama.
His hatred runs so deep and so wide that the pastor actively prays that Obama dies and is sent straight to hell. Here's his quote:
Like I've said before, the crazy is permeating our social structure to the point that our religious leaders are losing their senses. How can a religious leader actually pray for the death of others?
In light of irrational thoughts such as this, it should not surprise you that the Secret Service has seen an increase in presidential threats of ... wait for it ... 400 percent! The report states this increase has gone far and beyond anything the Secret Service has ever seen.
Ever.
Even folks who don't like the man's politics don't need to pray for his death. Where have our values and ethics gone?
You really need to watch the video or read the transcript. Click here and then consider your own thoughts and feelings. You can stop the madness in your own little way by being logical, rational, calm, and using your brain to think.
"Here is my sermon, why I hate Barack Obama. That's my sermon tonight, because Barack Obama is coming to town tomorrow morning. … I hate Barack Obama. You say, well, you just mean you don't like what he stands for. No, I hate the person. Oh, you mean you just don't like his policies. No, I hate him."

"No. I am not going to pray for his good. I am going to pray that he (Obama) dies and goes to hell."

Whoa.
Mom tried to raise me as a Baptist...
I'm cured now.
When did church turn into a political platform? Church is supposed to be about Jesus. End of story.
Thanks for sharing!
Nice to know someone else still has some sense. I'm starting to worry more about the conservative crazies than I ever did about the leftist.
"The person is smart. People, are stupid."
That's awful, Jack.
It's important to remember, however, that this is one, singled out, Baptist pastor who does not speak for all Baptist pastors or all Baptists.
My pastor, retired now, regularly asked us to pray for wisdom and guidance for President Obama because THAT is what the Bible tells us to do.
It's an easy pitfall to associate all of one group with something one crazy or ignorant member of that group does but, such an association could be as bigoted against that group (maybe) or as wrong as what this pastor has said.
And, let there be no mistake, such remarks as this Baptist preacher made are inexcusable coming from any pastor of any Christian church or coming from any member of any Christian church.
Jackie,
I make no assumptions about "all" Baptists or "all" conservatives or "all" Christians. However, I don't think this is as isolated as many of you would have us believe. If you read our local paper or watch the news, these folks are not isolated or rare anymore. The hatred has gone nuclear.
The Obama-Nazi-Antichrist movement is growing. We can no longer ignore it. But we can choose not to hate these folks. Instead, we should work to help them think more rationally and logically.
Yes, I'm still trying to convince you that this is isolated. It's NEWS because it doesn't happen every day.
Try out the words of a non-conservative talking about non-political things.
Schneier on Risk
I believe you that you don't assume that all Baptists aren't like this pastor. However, you called it a movement.
There *IS* a movement going on here, I would go so far to say that it is a non-violent revolution, but it is not characterized by what you are seeing. There are a few people that are a little nuts, but the central action in this movement is happening around sane people that have realized that our country isn't as free as it was when we were kids. The people in the revolution realize that the Republicans in Washington D.C. had a major hand to play in the direction our country is going. The Revolution started before Obama was nominated.
Campaign for Liberty
I believe that only Christ can give us freedom from sin, but we're fighting to give political, religious, and economic freedom to every individual in this Country.
